The name 'Departure Lounge' is a reflection of the transitory nature and the emotive yet relaxed style of this musical project. Departure Lounge follow in the tradition of Central's Reggae / Dub group- The Otautahi Allstars , being the second such band Oakley selectively commandeered Christchurch musicians to perform and record with. Stylistically different but similar in concept and notoriety- both the Allstars and Departure Lounge accrued a strong reputation throughout NZ for their soulful grooves and vibrant instrumentation in their brief existence and even briefer performance schedule. Departure Lounge's sublime sonic stylings and moody melodies are written by Oakley and inspired by the melodramatic Downbeat Jazz releases of such artists as 'The Cinematic Orchestra' and 'The Herbaliser' from U.K. label 'Ninja Tunes'.
